The short answer: yes, for most people, as long as you stay one night on the boat. An overnight cruise costs from $102 per person with all meals, and a typical good ship is about $165 per person in high season. What you pay for is the late afternoon, the sunset, the quiet evening and the early morning on the water, which a day trip never reaches. It is not worth it if you only have one day (you spend about 5 hours on the road), if you hate crowds and pick the busiest route, or if you expect blue skies in January.
What you get for your money
| Day trip | Overnight cruise (2 days, 1 night) | |
|---|---|---|
| Price with us | $45 per adult in a group ($77 travelling alone) | From $102 per person; about $165 on a typical ship; $190 to $430 on luxury ships |
| Time on the road | About 5 hours, there and back on the same day | About 3 hours each way, on two different days |
| Time on the water | A few hours, close to the harbour | About 23 hours, from noon to about 11:00 next day |
| Meals | Lunch | Lunch, dinner, breakfast and brunch |
| What you see | A cave and the islands nearest the harbour, the busiest part of the bay | A cave on 89 of our 96 boats, kayaking on 71, a swim stop on 57, sunset and sunrise on deck |
| Transfer from Hanoi | Included | Extra: $35 per person return by shared shuttle, or a private car from $165 |
The day trip is not bad value at $45, but most of what people come for happens after the day boats have gone home. That is why we tell almost everyone to stay one night. See what an overnight cruise includes, hour by hour.
What a 2 day cruise really costs from Hanoi
For two people sharing a cabin, high season (October to April), with the shared shuttle from Hanoi both ways:
| Level | Cruise for 2 | Shuttle for 2 | Total for 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cheapest boat we sell (Annam Junk) | $204 | $70 | $274 |
| Typical good ship (middle price of 96 boats) | $330 | $70 | $400 |
| Luxury ship | $380 to $860 | $70 | $450 to $930 |
Low season (May to September) saves less than people expect: about $11 per person on the middle-priced boat, and 20 of our 96 boats charge the same all year. Drinks from the bar and spa treatments are extra on every ship. The full breakdown by class and bay is in how much a Halong Bay cruise costs.
When a Halong Bay cruise is not worth it
- You only have one day. A Halong day trip is about 12 hours, with around 5 of them on the road. With one free day from Hanoi, Ninh Binh is the better choice: about 2 hours away, small-group day trips from $49.
- You are visiting in December to February and want blue skies. It is about 15 to 20°C, often grey and misty. The bay is calm and the mist is beautiful in photographs, but it is too cold to swim and the sunset is often hidden. Prices are high season.
- You are coming in July to September with no spare day. This is storm season. When a storm is forecast, the port authority stops every boat, usually for one or two days. With us you get a new date free of charge or a full refund, but if your trip has no slack you may lose the bay altogether. See is a Halong Bay cruise safe.
- You hate crowds and book the classic route. 35 of the 37 Halong Bay boats we sell visit Sung Sot Cave, and the day boats go there too. If quiet matters more than the famous caves, choose Lan Ha Bay (49 boats, more kayaking) or Bai Tu Long Bay (only 10 boats).
- You want a beach holiday. A cruise has a short swim stop and maybe a small beach. For days on the sand, go to Phu Quoc or the central coast.
Is Halong Bay overrated?
The part most people see is crowded, and that is where the “overrated” reviews come from: a day boat from the harbour, a queue at Sung Sot Cave, and dozens of boats around Titop Island at the same hour. The scenery itself is not overrated. Thousands of limestone islands rising straight out of the sea are hard to find anywhere else, and once the day boats leave in the late afternoon the bay is a different place. Two choices fix most of the disappointment: stay one night, and pick the bay before you pick the boat.
How to make sure it is worth it
- Stay one night. For most people one night is enough. Choose two nights only if you want a day ashore on Cat Ba or in the Bai Tu Long villages; compare in 2 day vs 3 day cruises.
- Pick the bay first. Halong Bay for the famous caves, Lan Ha for kayaking, swimming and balcony cabins, Bai Tu Long for the fewest boats.
- Pick a month that suits you. October to November and late March to April are the most reliable. See the best time to visit Halong Bay.
- Book an evening flight if you fly out the day you come back. Most boats are back at the pier by about 11:00 and Noi Bai airport is about 3 hours away.
- Look at the real cabin, not “or similar”. Every boat we sell has its own page with the cabins, the programme and the price for your date.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Halong Bay day trip worth it?
Only if you cannot spare a night. At $45 it is cheap, but you spend about 5 hours in a van for a few hours on the busiest part of the bay. If you have one free day, Ninh Binh is closer and usually more enjoyable.
Is one night in Halong Bay enough?
Yes for most people. One night gives you an afternoon excursion, the sunset, the evening and a morning activity. The second night adds a full day ashore, which suits slow travellers more than first-time visitors.
Is Halong Bay worth visiting in December?
Yes, if you are fine with cool, grey weather. The water is calm, storms are very rare and the misty islands look dramatic, but you will not swim and the sunset may not show. Bring a warm layer for the deck.
Is a luxury Halong Bay cruise worth the extra money?
It is worth it for a bigger cabin with a balcony, a smaller group and better food, not for different scenery: every boat on the same route sees the same islands. Our picks are in the 10 best luxury Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay cruises.
Is a Halong Bay cruise worth it with children?
Usually yes. Children under 4 travel free, children 4 to 11 pay the extra bed rate, and 32 of our boats have family cabins for 3 or 4. Kayaking and caves are what most children remember. See the best Halong Bay cruises for families.
