The short answer: if you only have one day, choose Ninh Binh: it is about 2 hours from Hanoi, a small-group day trip costs from $49 per person with lunch, and you are back for dinner. If you can spare a night, choose Halong Bay: an overnight cruise from $102 per person with all meals is the experience people remember, but a Halong day trip spends about 5 hours on the road. With three days or more, do both.
They are not the same place. Ninh Binh is an inland province south of Hanoi, with limestone peaks rising from rivers and rice fields, which is why it is called “Halong Bay on land”. Halong Bay is on the coast to the east, with the peaks rising from the sea. They are about 3 to 4 hours apart by road.

What each place is really like
Ninh Binh is on land and on the river. You sit in a small rowing boat while a local rows you through caves and between the peaks at Trang An or Tam Coc (about 2 to 3 hours on the water). You climb to the Hang Mua viewpoint for the famous view over the valley, visit Hoa Lu, the old royal capital, and often cycle through the rice fields. It is greener, more rural, and you are close to village life.
Halong Bay is at sea, and it is about the night. The scale is bigger: thousands of islands on open water. On an overnight cruise you have lunch as the boat sails out, kayak or visit a cave in the afternoon, watch the sunset from the deck and wake up anchored in the bay. Which is better for you?
- Only one day free: Ninh Binh. A Halong day trip is possible (from $45) but it is a long day with about 5 hours in a van.
- One night free: Halong Bay overnight cruise.
- Tight budget: Ninh Binh day trip at $49, lunch included.
- Want to be active: Ninh Binh (cycling, steps, motorbike tours). Halong is more relaxing.
- Travelling with grandparents or small children: Halong Bay; most of the day is spent sitting on deck.
- Photography: both. Ninh Binh’s rice fields are at their best when green (spring) or golden at harvest (around late May to early June); Halong is clearest in October and November.
How to do both
Most travellers who have three days in the north outside Hanoi do it like this:
- Day 1: Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi, back the same evening.
- Days 2-3: 2 day 1 night Halong Bay cruise, picked up at your Hanoi hotel.
That costs from about $49 + $102 + $35 transfer = $186 per person at the cheapest, or about $55 + $150 + $35 = $240 for a typical mid-range boat. Ninh Binh is better for a single day and for active, rural sightseeing. Halong Bay is better if you can stay a night on a boat. Neither replaces the other; if you have time, do both.
