Last updated 16 October 2026 by the Ava Travel team in Hanoi. Tour prices are the ones printed on each Ava Travel tour page for travel around November 2026, two adults sharing a room, unless a line says otherwise.

The short answer, using Ava Travel's own prices: an easy-pace private tour of Vietnam for older travellers costs about $127 per person per day with Ava Travel for two people sharing in 3 and 4-star hotels, or about $218 with 5-star hotels. The price is the same as any private tour; what changes is the shape of the trip. Our easiest routes stay 2.2 to 3 nights in each hotel, against 1.8 on an average tour, never spend more than 3 hours on the road in a day, and fly the long distances instead of driving them.

Below: what makes a Vietnam itinerary easy on older travellers, four real routes with prices, the places that need care (steps, heat, long drives) and how to choose the cruise night.

What makes a Vietnam itinerary easy for seniors

These are the rules we plan by. They come from comparing 178 real Vietnam tours from six operators, and they are the difference between a trip that is tiring and one that is not.

  • Fewer hotel changes. Each change costs about half a day: packing, check-out at noon, a transfer, check-in at 2 pm. We aim for at least 2 nights in every hotel and never more than two one-night stays in a row.
  • No day over 6 hours on the road, and after a long drive, a short day. Hanoi to Sapa is about 6 hours each way, so Sapa needs 2 nights or is better left out.
  • Fly the long legs. Hanoi to Hue or Da Nang is 1 hour 15 minutes by air against 13 hours by night train. Hue to Hoi An is the exception: 3 hours by car over the Hai Van Pass, with stops, is easier than a flight.
  • Arrival day is only the arrival. Airport, hotel, a short walk and dinner. The last day is only the transfer to the airport.
  • One free day in every 10. Usually in Hoi An or at the beach, where there is nothing you have to do.
  • Later starts. On a private tour the guide and car wait for you, so most days can start at 8:30 or 9:00.

Four easy-pace routes with prices

Every route includes a private English-speaking guide, a private air-conditioned car, hotels with breakfast, entrance fees and the listed meals. International flights, most domestic flights, the US$25 e-visa and most dinners are extra. "Hotel stays" counts the cruise night as one stay.

One region, two hotels: 7 days, $522 per person

Hoi An and Hue only. You unpack twice in a week, and the longest drive is the 3-hour coast road over the Hai Van Pass. Full day-by-day plan: Hoi An & Hue vacation | Classic package tour.

North and centre, 10 days: 10 days, $1,143 per person

Hanoi, Ninh Binh as a day trip, one night on Halong Bay, then Hoi An and Hue. Four hotels in ten days. Full day-by-day plan: Vietnam Heritage Journey Hanoi to Hue.

North to south with a beach finish: 11 days, $1,452 per person

Hanoi, Halong Bay, Saigon and the Mekong, then three nights on Phu Quoc to rest before the flight home. Full day-by-day plan: Vietnam North to South Tour with Phu Quoc Beach Escape.

Two weeks, five hotels: 14 days, $1,973 per person

The full country in 14 days with only five hotel stays, the slowest 2-week route we list. Full day-by-day plan: Vietnam Culinary Highlights: Authentic Tastes.

One thing we would change for most older travellers: on the 10 and 11-day routes the cruise returns to port around noon and the flight south is the same evening. It works, but it is a long day. Adding one night in Hanoi after the cruise costs a hotel night and takes the rush out of it. Ask for it when you request a price.

The cruise night on Halong Bay

Most of our routes include one night on Halong Bay or Lan Ha Bay. If stairs are a problem, the ship matters more than the route: only a few ships Ava Travel sells have a lift, and boarding often means stepping from a pier onto a small transfer boat. We list which ships have lifts, and which operator states its lift takes a wheelchair, in our Halong Bay cruise guide for seniors.

Getting around

  • Private car and driver every day, door to door, with luggage handled. See what a private car with driver costs in Vietnam.
  • Domestic flights for Hanoi to the centre and the centre to Saigon. Airlines offer wheelchair assistance at the airport if it is requested when the ticket is issued; tell us and we add it.
  • Hotels with a lift. Many small hotels in Hanoi's Old Quarter and Hoi An are tall and narrow. Tell us if you need a lift or a ground-floor room and we check it with each hotel before booking.

When to go

For older travellers the heat matters more than the rain. The most comfortable months for a north to south trip are November to April: the north is cool from December to February (bring a jacket for Hanoi and Halong), and the south is dry. Central Vietnam (Hue, Hoi An) is at its wettest from about October to December. May to August is hot everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vietnam a good destination for seniors?

Yes, if the trip is paced for it. With a private car, flights for the long distances and at least two nights in each hotel, the main sights (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hoi An, Hue, Saigon) involve little hard walking. The exceptions are the mountains of Sapa and Ha Giang and a few viewpoints with long stairs.

What is the best Vietnam tour for seniors?

A private tour that changes hotel as little as possible. With Ava Travel, our 10-day Hanoi to Hue route uses four hotels and costs $1,143 per person for two sharing; the 7-day Hoi An and Hue route uses two hotels and costs $522.

How much does a Vietnam tour for seniors cost?

With Ava Travel, about $127 per person per day for two people sharing in 3 and 4-star hotels, or $218 with 5-star, including a private guide and driver, hotels, entrance fees and listed meals. A solo traveller pays about 76% more.

Can you plan a trip for a traveller who uses a wheelchair or walks slowly?

We can plan a slower trip with a private car, step-free hotels where they exist and a ship with a lift for the cruise night. Pavements in Hanoi, Hoi An and Hue are uneven and often blocked by parked motorbikes, so tell us exactly what is comfortable and we check each hotel and ship before we confirm.

How many days do seniors need in Vietnam?

Two weeks for north to south at an easy pace, or 7 to 10 days for one or two regions. Trying to see the whole country in 10 days means a hotel change almost every night.

Five short steps. We reply within 1 hour with a private itinerary paced for you and priced line by line.
