Last updated 16 October 2026 by the Ava Travel team in Hanoi. Under each check we give Ava Travel's own answer, so you can hold us to the same standard as anyone else.

The short answer: choose a Vietnam travel agency on eight checks before you pay anything: a registered company you can look up, recent independent reviews, a written day-by-day quote that names every hotel, a price that says exactly what is included, secure card payment, a written cancellation policy, fast replies, and someone on the ground who can fix problems during the trip. An agency that answers all eight clearly is worth considering, whatever its size. One that will not put them in writing is not.

Below are the eight checks, what to ask, the warning signs, and how Ava Travel, a small agency in Hanoi, answers each one.

1. Check that the agency is a registered company

Every legitimate Vietnamese travel company has a registered name and a tax code, and will give them to you. Ask for both, and for an office address. If the only contact is a social media page and the payment details are a personal bank account, walk away, however good the price.

Ava Travel: AVA TRAVEL AGENCY CO.,LTD (tax code 0111323415), trading as Ava Travel Hanoi, with an office at 37 Nguyen Kha Trac, Hanoi.

2. Ask who actually runs the cruise, hotels and transport

Most agencies, large or small, book cruises, hotels and cars with other companies. That is normal. What matters is that the quote names them, so you can look each one up, and that the cruise and tour operators hold the licences Vietnam requires. Be wary of quotes that say "5-star cruise or similar" without naming the ship.

Ava Travel: we act as an agent for licensed operators, as our terms of service say. Every quote names the ship, each hotel and the car company, and our cruise pages show the cabin you are booking, with photos and the price.

3. Read recent, independent reviews

Reviews on Tripadvisor and Google are harder to fake than testimonials on an agency's own site. Read the recent ones and the low-scoring ones: how the agency handled a delay or a complaint tells you more than ten perfect reviews.

Ava Travel: rated 5.0 on Tripadvisor from 11 reviews. We are honest about this: we are a young agency and are still building our track record, so judge us on the other seven checks as well.

4. Ask for a written, day-by-day itinerary

A good quote shows each day: where you sleep, how long the drives are, what is included and what is free time. Watch for itineraries that change hotel almost every night or put 7 hours of driving into one day. That is how a cheap trip becomes a tiring one.

Ava Travel: we send a priced day-by-day plan within an hour of your request. We plan to a few fixed rules: no day over 6 hours on the road, the arrival day is only the arrival, and families and older travellers get at least 2 nights in each hotel. See easy-pace tours for seniors and family tours for how that looks.

5. Make sure the price says what is included

Compare quotes line by line: hotel level, private or shared guide, private or shared car, entrance fees, which meals, the cruise cabin, and whether domestic flights are included. A quote that looks cheap often leaves out flights, the cruise upgrade or the guide on some days.

Ava Travel: a private tour with guide and driver costs about $127 per person per day with 3 and 4-star hotels and about $218 with 5-star, for two people sharing. Domestic flights are added at the airline's own fare for your date. The full breakdown is in how much a private Vietnam tour costs.

6. Pay by card, not by bank transfer to a person

Paying by card through a known payment provider gives you a record and, with most cards, the right to dispute a charge if the service is not delivered. A request to send money by transfer to an individual's account is the most common sign of a scam.

Ava Travel: you pay by card through Stripe or by PayPal on our secure checkout, with no card surcharge. Cruises are paid in full at booking; private tours are confirmed with a 30% deposit and the balance date is written on the quote.

7. Get the cancellation policy in writing

Ask for the refund rules for every point before departure, and what happens if a cruise is cancelled for weather. "Non-refundable" with no detail is a warning sign.

Ava Travel: full refund more than 30 days before departure; 15% of the total from 30 to 11 days; 30% from 10 to 7 days; 100% within 7 days or for a no-show. If a cruise is cancelled by the operator or for bad weather, you get a free change of date or a full refund. Full wording in our terms of service.

8. Check who helps you during the trip

Flights move, roads close and boats are called back to port in storms. You want a named contact in Vietnam who answers quickly and can rearrange things, not an office email that replies on Monday.

Ava Travel: the same team in Hanoi answers on WhatsApp (+84 904 251 545) before and during your trip, usually within the hour.

Send your dates and travel style. We reply within 1 hour with a priced day-by-day plan you can check against this list.

Questions to send before you book

Copy these into your first message to any agency, Ava Travel included:

  • What is your company's registered name and tax code?
  • Which ship, hotels and transport company are in this quote?
  • What exactly is included in the price, and what will I pay on the spot?
  • How do I pay, and is there a card surcharge?
  • What is your cancellation policy for each date before departure?
  • Who do I call if something goes wrong during the trip, and how fast do you answer?

When Ava Travel is not the right choice

If you want a large international brand with protection under your own country's package travel rules, book with a tour company at home. If you want to meet other travellers, a small-group tour suits you better than a private trip. And if your budget is under about $70 per person per day including hotels, travelling independently will give you more for the money.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a good travel agency in Vietnam?

Check eight things in writing before you pay: a registered company name and tax code, recent independent reviews, a day-by-day quote that names every hotel, a clear list of what is included, card payment, a written cancellation policy, fast replies and a contact in Vietnam during the trip. Ava Travel publishes its own answer to each of these.

Is it safe to book a Vietnam tour with a local agency?

Yes, if the agency is a registered company, names the operators in the quote and lets you pay by card. Avoid any agency that asks for a bank transfer to a personal account. Ava Travel is registered as AVA TRAVEL AGENCY CO.,LTD (tax code 0111323415) and takes card payments through Stripe and PayPal.

Is it better to book a Vietnam tour locally or from home?

A local agency is usually cheaper and easier to change; a company at home gives you consumer protection under your own country's rules. With Ava Travel, a private tour costs about $127 per person per day with 3 and 4-star hotels.

How can I tell if a Vietnam travel agency is legitimate?

Ask for the registered company name, tax code and office address, check reviews on Tripadvisor or Google, and make sure the payment goes to the company through a card payment provider, not to an individual.

What should a Vietnam tour quote include?

The hotel for each night, the cruise ship and cabin, whether the guide and car are private, entrance fees, which meals, domestic flights and the cancellation policy. Ava Travel sends this as a priced day-by-day plan within 1 hour.

Five short steps. We reply within 1 hour with a private itinerary priced line by line.
