The short answer, using Ava Travel's own prices: a 10-day trip to Vietnam for a couple costs about $2,440 for the two of you on a private tour with 3 and 4-star hotels, a private guide and driver, and about $2,670 to $2,870 once you add two domestic flights and the e-visa. Two weeks costs about $3,647 for the land part, $3,877 to $4,077 with flights and visas. International flights are extra. Travelling independently on buses and budget hotels costs much less; a private tour is what you pay for not organising anything yourself.

The tour price is the middle price of the Ava Travel private tours of that length (47 tours across the four lengths), for two people sharing a room. It covers hotels with breakfast, a private English-speaking guide, a private car with driver, entrance fees, the meals listed and, on most routes, one night on a Halong Bay cruise. Is Vietnam expensive?
Not by the standards of a holiday in Europe, Australia or the US. What drives the cost is the style: the same 2-week route can be done for much less on sleeper buses and guesthouses, or for several times more in 5-star hotels with a 2-night cruise. A private tour sits in the middle: you pay for the guide, the car and the planning, and in return nobody waits for a bus and the plan is rearranged for you if a flight moves.
How to spend less
- Stay in two regions, not three. North and centre only (Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Halong Bay, Hue, Hoi An) needs one flight at most.
- Travel as four. Two couples together pay about 21% less each.
- Upgrade only where you stay put. Keep 3-star hotels in cities where you are out all day, and spend on the cruise night or the beach.
- Avoid Tet and Christmas to New Year, when flights, hotels and cruises are at their highest.
