The short answer, using Ava Travel’s own prices: travelling alone, a 2 day 1 night Halong Bay cruise costs from $173 (Annam Junk, a 7-cabin wooden junk) and the middle of the market is about $280. On every boat Ava Travel sells, one adult alone in a double cabin pays 85% of the cabin price, which works out at 1.7 times the per-person price you see for two people sharing. The cheapest solo cabin with a private balcony is $207 on Syrena.
Ava Travel sells 96 boats on Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay. Below are the real solo prices for each part of the market, the boats we suggest to people travelling on their own, and the costs people forget, such as the transfer from Hanoi.
How solo pricing works on a Halong Bay cruise
Halong Bay cruises are priced per cabin, and almost every cabin is a double or twin. When you travel alone you have the whole cabin, so you pay more than half of it. On our booking pages the rule is the same for every boat:
- Two adults sharing: each pays the per-person price shown, for example $159 on Peony.
- One adult alone: pays 85% of the two-person cabin price, so $159 × 2 × 85% = $270 on Peony.
- The solo price is shown before you pay. Choose 1 adult in the cabin table on any boat page and the total changes on the spot.
We do not sell shared cabins with strangers. If you would rather pay half, the only way is to travel with a friend.
Solo prices across the market
Lowest price for one adult in a double cabin, 2 days 1 night, high season (October to April), all meals on board. Prices in low season are the same or a little lower.
| Group | Boats | Cheapest solo (Ava Travel) | Typical solo (median) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Halong Bay | 37 | $173 | $255 |
| Bai Tu Long Bay | 10 | $224 | $268 |
| Lan Ha Bay | 49 | $233 | $280 |
| Luxury boats | 18 | $323 | – |
| Ultra-luxury boats | 6 | $408 | – |
Halong Bay is the cheapest bay for solo guests because it has the most small, simple boats. Lan Ha Bay costs about $25 more in the middle of the market, but it is quieter and the boats there are newer on average. See Halong Bay vs Lan Ha Bay.
The best Halong Bay cruises for solo travellers
Each pick is for a different kind of solo trip. Price is for one adult alone, 2 days 1 night, high season.
1. Annam Junk: the cheapest solo cruise, $173
A wooden junk with only 7 cabins on Halong Bay. Small enough that you will know everyone on board by dinner, which suits solo guests who want company without a party. Downside: simple cabins, no balcony. See Annam Junk.
2. Syrena: the cheapest solo balcony, $207
17 cabins on Halong Bay. The Deluxe Balcony Cabin costs $207 alone, the lowest solo price for a private balcony on any boat Ava Travel sells. Without the balcony it is $196. Downside: Halong Bay is the busiest of the three bays. See Syrena.
3. Hera Classic Boutique: a good value all-rounder, $204
19 cabins, Deluxe cabin of 20 sqm for $204 alone, or the 25 sqm Executive Balcony for $233. Downside: the cheapest cabins have a window, not a balcony. See Hera Classic.
4. Oasis Bay: for solo travellers who want a social trip, $233
Sold as a party cruise on Lan Ha Bay, with 22 cabins. If you are travelling alone and want to meet other travellers, this is the boat. Downside: not for a quiet night; the 16 sqm Deluxe cabins are small. See Oasis Bay.
5. Indochine: the most space for the money on Lan Ha Bay, $236
Every cabin has a balcony and the smallest, the Junior Suite, is 32 sqm, all for $236 alone. Downside: with 45 cabins it is one of the larger boats, so less personal than a junk. See Indochine.
6. Treasure Junk: a quiet small boat on Bai Tu Long Bay, $224
14 cabins on the quietest of the three bays. The 43 sqm Suite Ocean View Balcony is $280 alone. Downside: the cheapest Deluxe Ocean View is only 14 sqm. See Treasure Junk.
7. Amanda Legend: the smallest boat, $241
Only 5 cabins. Close to a private boat at a solo price of $241 in a 20 sqm Junior Cabin. Downside: no balcony cabins, and with so few guests the evening is very calm. See Amanda Legend.
8. Peony: the boat our guests look at most, $270
20 cabins on Lan Ha Bay, every cabin with a balcony, 28 sqm Deluxe Balcony Cabin for $270 alone. Downside: it is popular, so the cheapest cabins sell out first on busy dates. See Peony.
9. Orchid Trendy: the cheapest luxury boat for one, $323
Luxury class on Lan Ha Bay, 20 cabins, every cabin with a balcony, 28 sqm. Downside: about $90 more than a good mid-range boat for a similar cabin size. See Orchid Trendy.
10. Athena Premium: the biggest solo cabin under $350, $332
The Executive Balcony is 43 sqm, the largest entry cabin of any luxury boat we sell. Downside: 41 cabins, so a busy dining room on full nights. See Athena Premium.
Costs solo travellers forget
- The transfer from Hanoi is not included. The shared shuttle to Tuan Chau or Halong International Port is $20 one way or $35 return per person. A private car costs the same whether you are 1 or 4, from $165 one way, so the shuttle is almost always the better deal alone. See Hanoi to Halong Bay transport.
- Drinks are extra on most boats; meals on board are included.
- 3 days 2 nights costs more than twice as much alone on some boats, because you pay for the cabin for two nights. See 2-day vs 3-day cruises.
Is a Halong Bay cruise good for solo travellers?
Yes. The day is organised for you: boarding around 12:00 to 12:30, lunch at 13:00, kayaking or a cave in the afternoon, dinner at 19:00 and tai chi at sunrise. Activities are done as a group, so it is easy to talk to other guests. Small boats of 5 to 20 cabins feel friendlier than big ships of 40 or more.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a Halong Bay cruise for one person?
From $173 for 2 days 1 night on the boats we sell, with about $280 as the middle of the market. Add $35 per person for the return shuttle from Hanoi.
Is there a single supplement on Halong Bay cruises?
Yes, in effect. One adult alone pays 85% of the double cabin price, which is 70% more than one person’s share when two travel together.
Can I share a cabin with another solo traveller?
Not on the boats we sell. We do not match strangers in one cabin.
Is Halong Bay safe for a woman travelling alone?
Licensed cruise boats register every guest with a passport before departure, cabins lock, and crew are on board all night. A small boat with 20 cabins or fewer is a good choice if you want a calm, personal trip.
