Sapa tour overview

Why this trip

  • The classic valley walk, and the reason most people come to Sapa in the first place.
  • Down through Y Linh Ho, along the river past Lao Chai, out at Ta Van.
  • Black H’mong and Giay villages on the same day, both still working farms rather than showpieces.
  • Back in Sapa town by mid-afternoon.

An honest note: The route is not steep but the first hour is all downhill on uneven stone. After rain it is slippery and slow.

How to book a private departure. The booking box on this page charges the group rate of $35 per person. For a private departure, message us on WhatsApp or send an email with your dates and group size. We reply with the exact total from the table above and a payment link, so you always see the final figure before you pay anything.

Children. Under 5 travel free. Ages 5 to 8 pay 75 per cent of the adult price. From 9 years the full adult price applies, because a nine-year-old walks the same distance as everyone else. Tell us the ages when you book and we will apply the reduction before you pay.

How it works

  1. Book and confirm. Pay at checkout or message us on WhatsApp first. We confirm your date, your meeting point and your guide within one hour, and tell you exactly what to bring.
  2. Day 1. 09:00 Meet your guide in Sapa town and drive the short stretch to the top of the valley.
  3. Getting back. 15:30 Vehicle back to Sapa town. That usually leaves time to shower before an evening bus or train to Hanoi.

What to bring

It is a day walk from Sapa town, so bring only what you want on your back for the day.

  • Shoes with grip and ankle support. Trainers are fine in dry weather, not after rain
  • Walking poles if your knees dislike descents
  • Rain jacket or poncho, whatever the forecast says
  • A warm layer. Sapa is a mountain town and evenings are cold from October to March
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Cash in Vietnamese dong for drinks and anything you buy in the villages
  • Any medication you take, plus blister plasters

Getting to Sapa from Hanoi

Sapa is five to six hours from Hanoi. Most people take an overnight sleeper bus and arrive early, or a day bus that gets in around lunchtime. There is also the night train to Lao Cai plus an hour by road.

This tour starts and finishes in Sapa town, so transport from Hanoi is not included in the price above. We book it for you if you want it. Tell us your dates when you book and we will add it to your booking with the fare shown before you pay, rather than leaving you to sort it out at a bus office.
