Sapa tour overview

Why this trip

  • Two full days on the back of a bike, covering ground no trek reaches: Heaven Gate, the waterfall road, and the far end of the valley at Ban Ho.
  • Four ethnic communities across the two days, Black H’mong, Giay, Red Dao and Tay.
  • Night in a valley homestay between the two riding days.
  • The widest view of the region we sell, if you are happy not to walk it.

An honest note: Two long days in the saddle. Your back will know about it by the second afternoon, and we do not ride in heavy rain, so book with a spare day if your schedule is tight.

How to book a private departure. The booking box on this page charges the group rate of $170 per person. For a private departure, message us on WhatsApp or send an email with your dates and group size. We reply with the exact total from the table above and a payment link, so you always see the final figure before you pay anything.

Children. Under 5 travel free. Ages 5 to 8 pay 75 per cent of the adult price. From 9 years the full adult price applies, because a nine-year-old walks the same distance as everyone else. Tell us the ages when you book and we will apply the reduction before you pay.

How it works

  1. Book and confirm. Pay at checkout or message us on WhatsApp first. We confirm your date, your meeting point and your guide within one hour, and tell you exactly what to bring.
  2. Day 1. 08:30 Meet your driver in Sapa town.
  3. The evenings. You stay in family homes, not hotels. Mattress, mosquito net and thick blankets, a shared bathroom with hot water, and dinner cooked by the family. You are welcome in the kitchen.
  4. Getting back. 16:00 Back in Sapa town. That usually leaves time to shower before an evening bus or train to Hanoi.

What to bring

You are out for 2 days but sleeping in village homes, so pack small. Leave your main bag at your hotel in Sapa town.

  • Shoes with grip and ankle support. Trainers are fine in dry weather, not after rain
  • Rain jacket or poncho, whatever the forecast says
  • One change of clothes per night and a small towel
  • A warm layer. Sapa is a mountain town and evenings are cold from October to March
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Cash in Vietnamese dong for drinks and anything you buy in the villages
  • Any medication you take, plus blister plasters
  • A windproof layer. It is cold on the passes even in summer
  • Headlamp or a charged phone. Village lighting is thin after dark

Getting to Sapa from Hanoi

Sapa is five to six hours from Hanoi. Most people take an overnight sleeper bus and arrive early, or a day bus that gets in around lunchtime. There is also the night train to Lao Cai plus an hour by road.

This tour starts and finishes in Sapa town, so transport from Hanoi is not included in the price above. We book it for you if you want it. Tell us your dates when you book and we will add it to your booking with the fare shown before you pay, rather than leaving you to sort it out at a bus office.
