Sapa tour overview

Why this trek

  • You walk the length of the Muong Hoa Valley, not look at it from a viewpoint car park.
  • You sleep in a family home in Ta Van, with the family, not in a hotel with a “homestay” sign on the gate.
  • Three communities in two days: Black H’mong at Lao Chai, Giay at Ta Van, Red Dao at Giang Ta Chai.
  • You are back in Sapa town by mid-afternoon on day 2, with time to shower and catch the evening bus or train to Hanoi.
  • Group departures are capped at 12 people. Private departures run for any group size, including one person.

An honest note on the difficulty: the walking itself is not hard, but day 1 is a long descent on uneven stone and dirt paths, and after rain those paths are genuinely slippery. If your knees dislike downhill, take walking poles. This is not a trek for anyone who needs a level surface.

Price

Group departure. You join a small group of up to 12 people. Same route, same guide.

Any group size$75 per person

Solo travellers pay the same $75. There is no single supplement and no surcharge for travelling alone.

Private departure. Your own guide, your own pace. Same route and the same homestay family, but the guide belongs to your group for both days, so you can stop, slow down or skip a section whenever you like.

Group sizeTotalPer person
1 person$135$135
2 people$210$105
3 people$270$90
4 people POPULAR$328$82
5 people$390$78
6 people$450$75

At six people the private departure costs the same per person as the group departure, so from six upwards there is no reason to book the group option.

How to book a private departure. The booking box on this page charges the group rate of $75 per person. For a private departure, message us on WhatsApp or send an email with your dates and group size. We reply with the exact total from the table above and a payment link, so you always see the final figure before you pay anything.

Children. Under 5 travel free and share a bed with parents. Ages 5 to 8 pay 75 per cent of the adult price. From 9 years the full adult price applies, because a nine-year-old walks the same 18 km as everyone else. Tell us the ages when you book and we will apply the reduction before you pay.

How it works

  1. Book and confirm. Pay at checkout or message us on WhatsApp first. We confirm your date, your meeting point and your guide within one hour, and tell you exactly what to bring.
  2. Day 1, 09:00. Your guide meets you at your Sapa hotel, or at the stone church in the town centre if you are staying outside town. You leave your big bag behind, keep a small one, and walk out towards Y Linh Ho.
  3. Day 1 afternoon and evening. Down the valley beside the river, through Lao Chai, lunch on the way, into Ta Van in the late afternoon. Dinner is cooked with the family and you are welcome in the kitchen. You get a mattress, a mosquito net and thick blankets. The bathroom is shared and the water is hot.
  4. Day 2, back around 15:00. Through Giang Ta Chai, the bamboo forest, the waterfall and the suspension bridge, then a vehicle back to Sapa town. That leaves you the rest of the afternoon, which matters if you are on the evening bus to Hanoi.

What to bring

You are out for two days but sleeping at a homestay, so pack small. Leave your main bag at your Sapa hotel.

  • Shoes with grip and ankle support. Trainers are fine in dry weather, not after rain
  • Walking poles if your knees dislike descents
  • Rain jacket or poncho, whatever the forecast says
  • One change of clothes and a small towel
  • A warm layer. Ta Van sits at 950 m and evenings are cold from October to March
  • Headlamp or a charged phone. Village lighting is thin after dark
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Cash in Vietnamese dong for drinks and anything you buy in the villages
  • Any medication you take, plus blister plasters

Getting to Sapa from Hanoi

Sapa is five to six hours from Hanoi. Most people take an overnight sleeper bus and arrive early, or a day bus that gets in around lunchtime. There is also the night train to Lao Cai plus an hour by road.

This trek starts and finishes in Sapa town, so transport from Hanoi is not included in the price above. We book it for you if you want it. Tell us your dates when you book and we will add it to your booking with the fare shown before you pay, rather than leaving you to sort it out at a bus office.

Your itinerary

Day 1

Sapa town to Ta Van via Y Linh Ho and Lao Chai (about 11 km)

  • Meals: lunch and dinner. Overnight: family homestay in Ta Van.

    • 09:00 Meet your guide at your hotel in Sapa town, or at the stone church if you are staying further out. Leave your main bag behind and take a small pack for one night.
    • 09:30 Walk out of town towards Muong Hoa, then drop off the road onto the valley path at Y Linh Ho. From here the terraces open up on both sides.
    • 11:30 Through Lao Chai, a Black H’mong village on the valley floor. The path follows the Muong Hoa river for most of this stretch.
    • 12:30 Lunch in the valley.
    • 14:30 Continue into Ta Van, a Giay village, arriving at the homestay in the late afternoon. Time to wash, rest and walk around the village.
    • 18:30 Dinner cooked with the family. You are welcome in the kitchen if you would rather cook than watch.
Day 2

Ta Van to Giang Ta Chai and back to Sapa (about 7 km)

  • Meals: breakfast and lunch.

    • 07:30 Breakfast with the family.
    • 08:30 Leave Ta Van heading down the valley to Giang Ta Chai, a Red Dao village, crossing the suspension bridge on the way.
    • 10:00 Through bamboo forest to the waterfall, then up to the road at Su Pan. This is the only real climb of the two days.
    • 12:00 Lunch.
    • 13:30 Vehicle back to Sapa town.
    • 15:00 Back in Sapa. If you are on the evening bus or train to Hanoi you have time to shower and eat first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for planning this trip with Ava Travel.

You walk about 11 km on day 1 and 7 km on day 2, almost all of it on valley paths with no climbing. If you walk regularly you will be fine. The hard part is not the distance, it is the long descent on day 1 over uneven stone and dirt, which is slippery after rain. Take walking poles if your knees dislike going downhill.
It is a family home in Ta Van, not a hotel. You get a mattress on a raised platform, a mosquito net and thick blankets. The bathroom is shared and the water is hot. Dinner and breakfast are cooked by the family and you are welcome in the kitchen. It is comfortable and clean, but it is village accommodation and you should expect that.
No. Leave your main bag at your hotel in Sapa town and take a small pack with one change of clothes, a warm layer and a rain jacket. You collect the big bag when you get back on day 2.
The trek runs in rain, and Sapa gets plenty of it. The paths get slippery so we slow down and may shorten a section. Bring a poncho or a rain jacket whatever the forecast says. We only call it off when conditions make the valley genuinely unsafe, and then we move your date at no cost or refund you in full.
September and October for the harvest, when the terraces turn gold. March to May for green terraces and fewer people on the trail. June to August is green and warm with heavy afternoon rain. December to February is cold and often sits inside the cloud, but you will have the valley almost to yourself.
We would not recommend it below about 8 unless your child already walks long distances. Under 5 travel free sharing a bed with parents, ages 5 to 8 pay 75 per cent of the adult price, and from 9 years the full adult price applies. Tell us the ages when you book and we apply the reduction before you pay.
Yes. Sapa is five to six hours from Hanoi by sleeper bus, or you can take the night train to Lao Cai plus an hour by road. Tell us your dates when you book and we add it to your booking with the fare shown before you pay, instead of leaving you to arrange it at a bus office.
