Sapa tour overview

Why this trip

  • The classic route up Indochina’s highest mountain, with a night at camp around 2,800 m.
  • Summit at first light on day two, which is when this mountain is most likely to be clear.
  • Camp, porters and all mountain meals included.
  • Far more achievable than the one-day push, and a much better chance of a view.

An honest note: It is still a hard trek. Day one is a long climb with a heavy pack day behind you, camp is cold, and the descent on day two punishes knees. Sleeping bags are provided but nights at 2,800 m are genuinely cold from November to March.

How to book a private departure. The booking box on this page charges the group rate of $120 per person. For a private departure, message us on WhatsApp or send an email with your dates and group size. We reply with the exact total from the table above and a payment link, so you always see the final figure before you pay anything.

Children. Under 5 travel free. Ages 5 to 8 pay 75 per cent of the adult price. From 9 years the full adult price applies, because a nine-year-old walks the same distance as everyone else. Tell us the ages when you book and we will apply the reduction before you pay.

How it works

  1. Book and confirm. Pay at checkout or message us on WhatsApp first. We confirm your date, your meeting point and your guide within one hour, and tell you exactly what to bring.
  2. Day 1. 07:00 Leave Sapa town for the Tram Ton pass.
  3. The evenings. You stay in family homes, not hotels. Mattress, mosquito net and thick blankets, a shared bathroom with hot water, and dinner cooked by the family. You are welcome in the kitchen.
  4. Getting back. 14:00 Back at the pass and into Sapa town. That usually leaves time to shower before an evening bus or train to Hanoi.

What to bring

You are out for 2 days but sleeping in village homes, so pack small. Leave your main bag at your hotel in Sapa town.

  • Proper hiking boots, broken in. This is not a route for trainers
  • Shoes with grip and ankle support. Trainers are fine in dry weather, not after rain
  • One change of clothes per night and a small towel
  • Rain jacket or poncho, whatever the forecast says
  • A warm layer. Sapa is a mountain town and evenings are cold from October to March
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Cash in Vietnamese dong for drinks and anything you buy in the villages
  • Any medication you take, plus blister plasters
  • Hat and gloves. It is cold above 2,500 m in every season
  • Headlamp or a charged phone. Village lighting is thin after dark

Getting to Sapa from Hanoi

Sapa is five to six hours from Hanoi. Most people take an overnight sleeper bus and arrive early, or a day bus that gets in around lunchtime. There is also the night train to Lao Cai plus an hour by road.

This tour starts and finishes in Sapa town, so transport from Hanoi is not included in the price above. We book it for you if you want it. Tell us your dates when you book and we will add it to your booking with the fare shown before you pay, rather than leaving you to sort it out at a bus office.

Basic and shared. This is a mountain camp, not a lodge, and that is worth knowing before you book rather than after.
