The short answer: Ninh Binh is about 2 hours from Hanoi, so it works well as a day trip. Trang An or Tam Coc?
- Trang An is the longer, grander boat route, through several caves and past temples, about 2 to 3 hours on the water. Best if you want the scenery at its biggest.
- Tam Coc is shorter and runs between rice fields and three caves. It pairs well with cycling in the villages and is prettiest when the rice is green or golden (spring, and around late May to early June).
Both use small rowing boats with a local rower, and both are beautiful. Choose by the rest of the day: Trang An goes with Bai Dinh pagoda, Tam Coc with Hoa Lu and cycling.
What a day looks like
- Morning: pickup in the Old Quarter (from 06:45 on the early tour, a little later on others), 2 hours to Ninh Binh.
- Late morning: Hoa Lu, the 10th century capital, or Bai Dinh, the largest temple complex in the area.
- Lunch: included on the small-group tours.
- Afternoon: the rowing boat at Trang An or Tam Coc, then the Hang Mua climb, about 500 steps, for the view over the valley.
- Evening: back in Hanoi.

How do I get from Hanoi to Ninh Binh?
About 2 hours by road. On a tour, a van collects you from your Old Quarter hotel. Independently, there are buses and trains to Ninh Binh city, but you then need a taxi or bicycle to reach Tam Coc or Trang An, so for a single day a tour is usually easier.
Is a Ninh Binh day trip worth it?
Yes. It is one of the most scenic days you can have from Hanoi, with only 2 hours on the road each way, and from $49 including lunch.
Is Hang Mua hard to climb?
