Last updated 16 October 2026 by the Ava Travel team in Hanoi. Lift and cabin details are from each operator’s own factsheet and deck plan; prices are Ava Travel’s prices today.
The short answer, from Ava Travel’s own catalogue: yes, a Halong Bay cruise works for older travellers and people who find stairs hard, if you choose the ship carefully. Most boats have only steep stairs between decks. Of the 96 overnight ships Ava Travel sells, the operators of four show a passenger lift in their own documents: Celina, Lyra Grandeur, Larissa and Halora Nova. Celina is the only one whose operator says the lifts take a wheelchair, from $170 per person at Ava Travel. The least expensive of the four is Halora Nova at $153 per person, 2 days 1 night.
A lift solves the stairs on board. It does not solve getting on the ship or the cave visits, so read the section on what a lift does not fix before you book.
Halong Bay cruises with a lift: the four ships

1. Celina
Celina is the only ship Ava Travel sells whose operator states in writing that its lifts are wheelchair accessible. It has two lifts serving every deck, each for 10 people, plus two staircases per deck. Every cabin is at least 45 sqm with a balcony, among the largest standard cabins on the bays, so there is room to move around a bed and a walking frame. Cabins have a bathtub and a separate standing shower. The ship began sailing in February 2026 and has a 70 sqm four-season pool on Deck 1 and two restaurants on Deck 4, both reached by lift.
- Lift: 2 lifts, 10 people each, all decks
- Wheelchair: Yes, the operator says both lifts take a wheelchair
- Bathroom: Bathtub with jacuzzi and a separate standing shower
- Ship: 62 cabins, Lan Ha Bay
- Price at Ava Travel: from $170 per person in low season, $182 in high season

2. Lyra Grandeur
Lyra Grandeur’s factsheet lists a lift for 6 people across its 6 floors. The restaurant is on Deck 2, and the 10 Oasis Suites on Deck 1 sit next to reception and the pool, so you can spend the whole trip on two decks. Every suite has an ocean-view bathtub with a rain shower; the factsheet does not list a separate walk-in shower, so tell us if stepping into a bath is hard and we will ask the ship how it can help. Launched in August 2025.
- Lift: 1 lift for 6 people
- Wheelchair: Not stated
- Bathroom: Bathtub with rain shower (no separate standing shower listed)
- Ship: 33 cabins, Lan Ha Bay
- Price at Ava Travel: from $195 per person in low season, $245 in high season

3. Larissa
Larissa’s factsheet shows a lift from Deck 1 to Deck 3, where the restaurant is. The sundeck and sky lounge on the top deck are not on the lift, and the programme we have serves dinner on the top deck, so ask the crew to serve you in the Deck 3 restaurant instead. Cabins have both a bathtub and a standing shower; the two Deluxe Partial Sea View cabins have a standing shower only, which is easier if you cannot step into a bath. We do not list those two online, so ask us on WhatsApp. Larissa sails Bai Tu Long Bay, the quietest of the three routes, and is new in 2026.
- Lift: 1 lift, Decks 1 to 3 only
- Wheelchair: Not stated
- Bathroom: Bathtub and standing shower; 2 cabins have a standing shower only
- Ship: 28 cabins, Bai Tu Long Bay
- Price at Ava Travel: from $197 per person in low season, $197 in high season

4. Halora Nova
Halora Nova’s own deck plan marks a lift on Deck 1 (reception), Deck 4 (restaurant) and Deck 5 (sundeck). The operator has not sent us a written description of it, so we confirm the details for your date before you pay. It is the least expensive of the four, with 40 cabins on Lan Ha Bay and a pool on Deck 2.
- Lift: Lift shown on the deck plan
- Wheelchair: Not stated
- Bathroom: Not stated
- Ship: 40 cabins, Lan Ha Bay
- Price at Ava Travel: from $153 per person in low season, $165 in high season

What a lift does not fix
- Getting on board. Celina and Lyra Grandeur anchor off Tuan Chau and you reach them on a small transfer boat, which means a few steps down and a step across. The crew hold your arm and carry bags, but a wheelchair user may need the crew to help them across. Larissa boards at Halong International Cruise Port. Tell us before you pay and we ask the ship in writing how it will board you.
- Caves and islands. Most caves in the bays are reached by stone steps. None of these four ships visits Sung Sot Cave or Ti Top Island, the two Halong Bay stops with the longest staircases. On Lan Ha Bay the usual morning stop, Dark and Bright Cave, is visited sitting in a bamboo boat rowed by locals; climbing in and out is the hard part, and Celina’s programme says you can stay on board instead.
- Kayaks and bicycles. Every activity is optional. Staying on the sundeck while others kayak is common, and the crew do not mind.
- The road. Hanoi to the port is about 2.5 hours each way. The shared shuttle usually stops once on the way. A private car, from $165 return at Ava Travel, can stop whenever you like and picks you up at your hotel door.
Tips if stairs or walking are hard
- Choose 2 days 1 night. On many 3 day 2 night cruises the second day moves you onto a smaller day boat for several hours (Celina does this from about 10:30 to 15:30), which means more boarding and more steps.
- Ask for a cabin near the lift or on the same deck as the restaurant. We pass the request to the ship with your booking; the ship assigns cabins, so it is a request, not a guarantee.
- Tell us about any medical needs when you book, and bring your own medicines. The ship spends the night at anchor out in the bay.
- Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is worth having on any cruise.
- Choose a calm month. October to April has few storms. See our guide to storms and cancellations if you travel June to October.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Halong Bay cruise suitable for elderly travellers?
Yes, if you choose a ship with a lift and a short trip. Of the 96 ships Ava Travel sells, Celina, Lyra Grandeur, Larissa and Halora Nova show a passenger lift in their own documents. Pick 2 days 1 night, skip the cave stops if stairs are hard, and book a private car from Hanoi so you can stop on the way.
Which Halong Bay cruise has an elevator?
Celina (two lifts for 10 people each, all decks), Lyra Grandeur (one lift for 6 people), Larissa (one lift, Decks 1 to 3) and Halora Nova (lift on its deck plan). Ava Travel sells all four, from $153 per person.
Can I do a Halong Bay cruise in a wheelchair?
Celina is the only ship Ava Travel sells whose operator says its lifts are wheelchair accessible. Boarding is the difficult part: Celina is reached by a transfer boat from Tuan Chau, so the crew have to help you across. Message Ava Travel before you book and we will ask the ship in writing how it will board you.
Are there many stairs on a Halong Bay cruise?
On most ships, yes: decks are linked by steep stairs, and caves such as Sung Sot and islands such as Ti Top have long stone staircases. A ship with a lift and a Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay route avoids both.
Is 2 days 1 night or 3 days 2 nights better for seniors?
2 days 1 night. The second day of many 3 day cruises is spent on a smaller day boat, which means extra boarding and more walking.
