Bai Tu Long Bay cruise overview
Signature is the odd one out among the ships on this page, and deliberately so. It is a wooden boat with 12 cabins, built in 2013, and it sails Bai Tu Long Bay rather than the busier main bay.
Why Bai Tu Long, and why wood
Bai Tu Long sits north-east of the main bay and takes far fewer boats. The scenery is the same limestone, the traffic is not. If you have seen photographs of Halong with a dozen ships in the frame and that put you off, this is the answer.
The timber hull changes the feel of the boat. It is quieter under way and it looks like the junks people picture. It is also an older, smaller vessel: 12 cabins, and every cabin has its own jacuzzi. Come for the bay and the boat, not for the facilities.
Choosing a cabin
Two things to check before you pick.
The Junior Suite, from $140 per person, has no balcony. The Senior Suite, from $150, does. That $10 is the difference between a window and a door onto the water, and on this boat it is worth paying.
Then the family cabins, which are the real reason to look at Signature. The Elite Family Suite is 45 sqm with two double beds and sleeps four, from $183 per person with four sharing. Four-person cabins with two real double beds barely exist in this bay. The Exclusive Family Suite is 32 sqm, from $135 per person.
Before you book
Departure is from Halong International Cruise Port, not Tuan Chau, and the drive is about 3 hours. The shuttle is not in the cabin price. A tender runs you out to the boat.
You are back ashore around 10:45 on day two, earlier than most.

Morning
Shuttle pickup from your hotel for the 3-hour run to Halong International Cruise Port (not included in the cabin price). A small tender takes you out to Signature. Welcome drinks while the crew run the safety procedure and check you in.
Afternoon
Lunch as the boat heads out through Bai Tu Long, which carries a fraction of the traffic of the main bay. The afternoon is at Cong Do, for kayaking among the islands and swimming from a white-sand beach, then the cooking class.
