Sapa tour overview

Why this trip

  • Three days in Sapa with a car, a guide and a hotel, and no trail to walk unless you decide you want one.
  • The return Fansipan cable car ticket is inside the price, so you stand at 3,143 m without climbing a metre.
  • Rice terraces, Silver Waterfall and the O Quy Ho pass are all seen from viewpoints the car drives you to.
  • Built for knees, for parents, for small children and for anyone who came to look at Sapa rather than walk across it.

An honest note: this is a no-trekking tour, not a no-walking one. Cat Cat is a paved path with a long flight of steps, Ham Rong is a garden path, and each viewpoint costs you a few minutes on your feet. Count on one to three kilometres a day on made surfaces. All of it is optional and the car is always where you left it.

Price

Group departure. You share an air-conditioned van with up to 10 people. Same route, same guide, same hotel standard.

Any group size$190 per person

Private departure. Your own car, your own guide, your own pace. You decide when to stop, how long to stay at a viewpoint and what to skip.

Group sizeTotalPer person
1 person$369$369
2 peoplePOPULAR$538$269
3 people$717$239
4 people$876$219
5 people$1045$209
6 people$1194$199
7 people$1393$199
8 people$1592$199

Travelling alone. One person on a group departure is $323, and on a private departure $369. Neither is half of the two-person price, and the reason is simple: a hotel room and a car cost the same whether one person or two use them. Both figures are the full amount, already shown in the booking box before you pay.

What the price carries. The return Fansipan cable car ticket is inside it, along with every entrance ticket on the route and lunch on all three days. Cheaper Sapa packages often leave the cable car out and you buy it at the station, so compare what is in the number before you compare the numbers.

Children. Under 5 travel free. Ages 5 to 8 pay 75 per cent of the adult price. From 9 years the full adult price applies. Tell us the ages when you book and we apply the reduction before you pay.

How it works

  1. Book and confirm. Pay at checkout or message us on WhatsApp first. We confirm your date, your hotel, your meeting point and your guide within one hour.
  2. Day 1. Your guide meets you at your hotel in Sapa town. If you arrived on the night bus and the room is not ready, reception holds your bags and the day starts anyway.
  3. The evenings. You are in a hotel in town, not a village house, so dinner is your own choice and there is hot water, wifi and a lift. Your guide will point you at the places locals eat rather than the ones with a photograph of the food outside.
  4. Getting back. Day 3 ends in Sapa town in the afternoon, which leaves time to shower before an evening bus or train to Hanoi.

What to bring

You sleep in a hotel and travel by car, so pack normally. This is the short list of things Sapa punishes people for leaving behind.

  • Shoes you can walk on wet stone in. The steps at Cat Cat and at the summit are slippery after rain
  • A rain jacket, whatever the forecast says
  • A warm layer, and a second one from October to March. The cable car station is above 3,000 m and it is cold up there in every season
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses. The light at the top is fierce when the cloud breaks
  • Cash in Vietnamese dong for drinks, the funicular and anything you buy in the villages
  • Any medication you take

Getting to Sapa from Hanoi

Sapa is five to six hours from Hanoi. Most people take an overnight sleeper bus and arrive early, or a day bus that gets in around lunchtime. There is also the night train to Lao Cai plus an hour by road.

This tour starts and finishes in Sapa town, so transport from Hanoi is not inside the price above. We book it for you if you want it. Pick it in the booking box and the fare is shown before you pay, rather than leaving you to sort it out at a bus office.

Your itinerary

Day 1

Sapa town, Ham Rong and the Muong Hoa viewpoints

  • Meals: lunch. Overnight: 4-star hotel in Sapa town.

    • Meet your guide at your hotel in Sapa town. If you came up on the night bus and cannot check in yet, reception keeps your bags.
    • Ham Rong mountain garden above the town. Paved the whole way, and the best view there is over Sapa itself.
    • Lunch in town.
    • Afternoon drive down the Muong Hoa valley, stopping at the terrace viewpoints above Lao Chai and Ta Van. You get out, look, take photographs and get back in.
    • Check in and the evening is yours. Your guide can book a Red Dao herbal bath if you want one.
Day 2

Cat Cat village and Fansipan by cable car

  • Meals: breakfast, lunch. Overnight: same hotel.

    • Cat Cat village after breakfast, a paved loop down to the waterfall at the bottom. The way back is uphill steps, and there is a buggy if you would rather ride it.
    • On to the cable car station and the three-rope cable car over the Muong Hoa valley to the Fansipan summit station, about twenty minutes in the air.
    • At the top, either the funicular or the six hundred steps to the summit marker at 3,143 m. Your guide will tell you honestly which one suits you.
    • Lunch at the summit complex or back down in town, whichever you prefer.
    • Back to the hotel in the afternoon. The evening is free.
Day 3

Silver Waterfall, Love Waterfall and the O Quy Ho pass

  • Meals: breakfast, lunch.

    • Check out after breakfast and your bags go in the car.
    • West out of Sapa to Silver Waterfall, which stands right beside the road, then Love Waterfall for anyone who wants the short walk in to it.
    • Up to the O Quy Ho pass, the highest road pass in Vietnam, and the Heaven Gate viewpoint looking down into Lai Chau.
    • Lunch, then back into Sapa town in time for an afternoon or evening bus or train.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for planning this trip with Ava Travel.

No trail walking, no mud and no homestay. What is left is a paved path at Cat Cat, a garden path at Ham Rong and a few minutes on your feet at each viewpoint, so one to three kilometres a day. The car waits where you got out of it, so you can sit any section out without changing the rest of the day.
Yes, this is the Sapa tour we build for exactly that. The only two places that ask anything of your legs are the steps at Cat Cat and the steps at the Fansipan summit station, and both have an alternative: a buggy at Cat Cat and a funicular at the top.
It closes in high wind and for maintenance, and nobody can predict that in advance. If it is shut on your day we take the ticket price off your bill and spend the day on the valley road and the pass instead.
A 4-star hotel in the centre of Sapa town. We confirm the name within one hour of your booking rather than leaving it vague. If you would rather stay somewhere specific, tell us when you book and we will price that instead.
Yes. Pick one traveller in the booking box and the price updates by itself. A hotel room and a car cost the same whether one person or two use them, so a solo booking is not half of the two-person price.
Yes. Prices on this page are per person in US dollars and include all taxes and service charges. We do not add a booking fee or a card surcharge, so the total you see at checkout is the total you pay.
Within one hour. We come back to you with the departure, the meeting point and your guide, and tell you what to bring.
More than 30 days before departure costs nothing. From 30 to 11 days we keep 15 per cent, from 10 to 7 days 30 per cent, and inside 7 days or a no-show is charged in full. Changing your date counts as a cancellation and a new booking. If we cancel, or weather makes the tour unsafe, we move your date at no cost or refund you in full.
Yes. We book sleeper buses, cabin buses and the night train alongside your tour and show you the fare before you pay.
