Ha Giang tour overview

Why this trip

  • Four days on the loop with shorter days on the bike and a night in Meo Vac.
  • Du Gia comes last, so you finish in a rice valley rather than on a highway.
  • Sunday market in Meo Vac if your dates line up.
  • Local driver on every bike, one passenger each.

An honest note: This route skips Lung Cu. If the far north matters to you, take the other 4 day loop.

Want the same route without other travellers? Ask us for a private departure and we quote the total before you pay.

Children. We do not put children under 12 on the back of a motorbike on these roads. For families, the same routes run by private car.

How it works

  1. Book and confirm. Pay at checkout or message us on WhatsApp first. We confirm your date, the meeting point and your guide within one hour, and tell you what to bring.
  2. On the bike. Your driver handles the road. You wear a helmet, keep your bag small and hold on. If you want to stop for a photo, tap your driver on the shoulder.
  3. The nights. Homestays are simple: mattress, blankets, a shared bathroom with hot water, and dinner with the family. Small hotels in the towns have private bathrooms.
  4. The permit. Since June 2026 foreign visitors need a border area permit for Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac. Bring your passport. Your guide arranges the permit against it.

What to bring

Pack small. Leave large luggage in Hanoi or at your hotel in Ha Giang city.

  • Your passport, for the border area permit
  • A warm layer. The passes are cold from October to March
  • A windproof layer and gloves. It is cold on the passes in an open vehicle, even in summer
  • Rain jacket or poncho, whatever the forecast says
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Cash in Vietnamese dong for drinks and small purchases
  • One change of clothes per night and a small towel
  • A headlamp or charged phone. Villages are dark at night

Getting to Ha Giang from Hanoi

Ha Giang city is six to seven hours from Hanoi. Most people take the overnight sleeper bus and arrive early in the morning. This tour starts in Ha Giang city, so the bus is not included in the price above. We book it for you if you want it and show you the fare before you pay.

Your itinerary

Day 1

Ha Giang city to Dong Van through Quan Ba and Yen Minh

  • Meals: lunch and dinner. Overnight: homestay or small hotel in Dong Van.

    • Morning: leave Ha Giang city on the road north. First stop is the Quan Ba Heaven Gate viewpoint, looking down over the Tam Son valley and the two rounded hills locals call the Fairy Bosom.
    • On through Yen Minh, where the road starts switchbacking through pine forest and karst.
    • Lunch on the way.
    • Afternoon: into the Dong Van karst plateau, with a stop at the H’mong King Palace in Sa Phin, the stone and timber house of the Vuong family who ran this border region in the early 1900s.
    • Arrive in Dong Van in the late afternoon. The old quarter is a short walk from where you stay.
Day 2

Dong Van to Meo Vac over the Ma Pi Leng pass

  • Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight: homestay or small hotel in Meo Vac.

    • Morning: out of Dong Van onto the Ma Pi Leng pass, the stretch of road cut into the cliff above the Nho Que river. Stops at the viewpoints on the way.
    • Down to the river for a boat through the bottom of the canyon, between walls of limestone.
    • Lunch in Meo Vac.
    • Afternoon: free time in Meo Vac, a market town at the foot of the karst.
Day 3

Meo Vac to Du Gia

  • Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight: family homestay in Du Gia.

    • Morning: an easy start in Meo Vac. On Sundays the market is the best reason to be here.

    • Lunch on the way.
    • Afternoon: down into the Du Gia valley and time at the waterfall.
    • Evening: dinner with the homestay family.

    • Back up to the main road and over the Quan Ba pass.
    • Lunch on the way.
    • Afternoon: into Ha Giang city, arriving in time for the evening bus to Hanoi.
