Sapa tour overview

Why this trip

  • The summit of Indochina, 3,143 m, on foot and back down in a single day.
  • Twelve hours or more of walking with a serious amount of climbing.
  • Small group, maximum eight, because on this mountain the group moves at the pace of its slowest member.
  • For hikers who already know what a long mountain day feels like.

An honest note: This is the hardest thing we sell in Sapa and it is not a scenic stroll. If you have not done a twelve hour hill day before, take the two-day version instead. We will say so if your fitness does not match the route.

How to book a private departure. The booking box on this page charges the group rate of $65 per person. For a private departure, message us on WhatsApp or send an email with your dates and group size. We reply with the exact total from the table above and a payment link, so you always see the final figure before you pay anything.

Children. Under 5 travel free. Ages 5 to 8 pay 75 per cent of the adult price. From 9 years the full adult price applies, because a nine-year-old walks the same distance as everyone else. Tell us the ages when you book and we will apply the reduction before you pay.

How it works

  1. Book and confirm. Pay at checkout or message us on WhatsApp first. We confirm your date, your meeting point and your guide within one hour, and tell you exactly what to bring.
  2. Day 1. 05:00 Leave Sapa town in the dark. There is no way to do this on a late start.
  3. Getting back. 17:30 Back at the pass and into Sapa town. That usually leaves time to shower before an evening bus or train to Hanoi.

What to bring

It is a day walk from Sapa town, so bring only what you want on your back for the day.

  • Proper hiking boots, broken in. This is not a route for trainers
  • Shoes with grip and ankle support. Trainers are fine in dry weather, not after rain
  • Rain jacket or poncho, whatever the forecast says
  • A warm layer. Sapa is a mountain town and evenings are cold from October to March
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Cash in Vietnamese dong for drinks and anything you buy in the villages
  • Any medication you take, plus blister plasters
  • Hat and gloves. It is cold above 2,500 m in every season

Getting to Sapa from Hanoi

Sapa is five to six hours from Hanoi. Most people take an overnight sleeper bus and arrive early, or a day bus that gets in around lunchtime. There is also the night train to Lao Cai plus an hour by road.

This tour starts and finishes in Sapa town, so transport from Hanoi is not included in the price above. We book it for you if you want it. Tell us your dates when you book and we will add it to your booking with the fare shown before you pay, rather than leaving you to sort it out at a bus office.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for planning this trip with Ava Travel.

If you regularly do full-day hill walks with 1,000 m or more of climbing, yes. If your walking is flat and occasional, no, and we would rather tell you now than at 2,500 m.
The cable car station is not on this route and connecting to it costs extra time and a separate ticket. Ask us before you book if you want that arrangement and we will price it.
Your guide turns the group around. That decision is theirs and it is not negotiable on the mountain. We move your date rather than push on.
Yes. Prices on this page are per person in US dollars and include all taxes and service charges. We do not add a booking fee or a card surcharge, so the total you see at checkout is the total you pay.
Within one hour. We come back to you with the departure, the meeting point and your guide, and tell you what to bring.
More than 30 days before departure costs nothing. From 30 to 11 days we keep 15 per cent, from 10 to 7 days 30 per cent, and inside 7 days or a no-show is charged in full. Changing your date counts as a cancellation and a new booking. If we cancel, or weather makes the tour unsafe, we move your date at no cost or refund you in full.
Yes. We book sleeper buses, cabin buses and the night train alongside your tour and show you the fare before you pay.
