Halong Bay cruise overview
Phoenix is a wooden boat with 22 cabins, sailing Halong Bay since 2014. Big modern ships have taken over the bay in the last decade; this is one of the few timber ships still working, and it looks like the junk people picture when they think of Halong.
Who this ship is for
Families, mostly. Phoenix has two genuine family cabins: 36 sqm sleeping three at $450, and 36 sqm sleeping four at $500. A four-berth cabin is rare on this bay, and at $500 it is the cheapest way Ava can put four people on the water for a night.
Day one goes to the Pearl Farm for kayaking; day two is Ti Top Island, where you can swim off the beach or climb to the 360-degree viewpoint.
Choosing a cabin
Be clear-eyed about the two cheapest rooms. Deluxe at $245 and Suite Ocean View at $275 are both 18 sqm and neither has a balcony. Eighteen square metres is small, and the $30 between them buys a better window, not more room.
The Royal Suite Balcony at $345 is 30 sqm with a balcony and is the only two-person cabin here that feels roomy.
The family cabins at 36 sqm have no balcony either.
Before you book
Boarding is at noon at Tuan Chau Wharf. Transfer from Hanoi is charged separately. There is no spa on this ship.
