What we would change for young children: the Mekong night in Can Tho means a 4-hour drive each way and a 5:30 start for the floating market. With under-8s we often replace it with a day trip from Saigon and add a night at the beach in Hoi An.
How we pace a trip with children
- We aim for at least 2 nights in each hotel, never more than two one-night stays in a row. Packing for four is slow.
- No day over 6 hours on the road, and flights for Hanoi to the centre and the centre to Saigon.
- 4 nights in Hoi An instead of 3: the old town, bikes in the rice fields, a lantern evening and the beach.
- A free day every 10 days, usually at the beach. Children enjoy the trip more with one day of nothing.

Rooms, cabins and children's prices
- Hotels: family rooms or connecting rooms where the hotel has them; otherwise two rooms or an extra bed. We check this for each hotel before we price it.
- Cruise: each ship has its own child prices and its own rules on extra beds. Our Halong Bay family cruise guide lists them ship by ship.
- Car seats: child seats are not standard in Vietnamese cars. Tell us the children's ages and we ask the car company, or bring a travel booster seat.
- Tickets: many sights charge children less or nothing below a set height or age; we apply it in the quote.
When to go with children
Most families travel in the school holidays. In June to August the north and south are hot and humid with short heavy showers, while central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue) is dry and hot: good beach weather. At Christmas and New Year the north is cool, the south is dry and warm, and the centre can still be wet. Easter is a good time everywhere.
