Getting from Hanoi to Halong Bay is straightforward, but there are several options at very different price points. Here’s an honest breakdown of every transport option so you can decide what’s right for your trip.

The Distance & Journey Time

Halong Bay is approximately 160–170km east of Hanoi. By road, the journey takes 3–4 hours depending on traffic (the road passes through or around Hai Phong, a major port city). There is no train service to Halong Bay. A seaplane from Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport takes approximately 45 minutes.

Option 1: Shared Minibus (Included in Most Cruise Packages)

Cost: Included in cruise package price | Time: 3.5–4 hours | Comfort: ★★★

The standard option. A shared air-conditioned minibus picks you up from your Hanoi hotel and drops you at the pier. You share the bus with other cruise passengers — typically 8–16 people. There’s usually one comfort stop along the way. The most convenient option if you’re booking a cruise package, as everything is coordinated for you.

Option 2: Limousine Bus (Upgrade)

Cost: $15–$25 extra per person | Time: 3–3.5 hours | Comfort: ★★★★

Limousine buses are sleeper or reclining-seat coaches with fewer passengers, better legroom, and a smoother ride. Popular with taller travellers or those who find the minibus cramped. Worth the upgrade for a 3-day cruise where you’ll spend more time on the road.

Option 3: Private Car or Van

Cost: $80–$150 for the vehicle (not per person) | Time: 3–3.5 hours | Comfort: ★★★★★

A private car or minivan gives you the flexibility to stop where you want, depart when you want, and travel in total comfort. For groups of 4+, the per-person cost is comparable to the limousine bus. Excellent for families or travellers with mobility considerations.

Option 4: Public Bus

Cost: $3–$6 per person | Time: 3.5–5 hours | Comfort: ★★

Public buses run from Hanoi’s Luong Yen or My Dinh bus stations to Halong City. Very cheap but inconvenient — you’ll need to figure out onward transport from Halong City bus station to the pier (another 15–30 minutes by taxi). Not recommended if you’re booking a cruise package, as timing coordination is difficult.

Option 5: Seaplane

Cost: $150–$200 per person one-way | Time: 45 minutes | Comfort: ★★★★★

The seaplane operated by Hai Au Aviation offers spectacular aerial views of the bay before you even board your cruise. A genuine once-in-a-lifetime experience — but at a significant premium. Popular for honeymoons and special occasions.

Our Recommendation

For most travellers, the shared minibus included in your cruise package is perfectly comfortable. If you’re splurging on a 3-day premium cruise, consider upgrading to the limousine bus. For groups of 4+, a private car is great value.
