Sapa tour overview

Why this trip

  • A stream trail past three small waterfalls into the H’mong village of Hang Da.
  • Shaded and cool almost the whole way, which makes it the day walk we recommend in summer.
  • Cat Cat and Sin Chai at the start, then the trail leaves the visited part behind.
  • Easy enough for a first day at altitude, interesting enough not to feel like a warm-up.

An honest note: Waterfalls mean wet rock. There are two short scrambles where you will want your hands free, and after heavy rain we reroute around them.

How to book a private departure. The booking box on this page charges the group rate of $40 per person. For a private departure, message us on WhatsApp or send an email with your dates and group size. We reply with the exact total from the table above and a payment link, so you always see the final figure before you pay anything.

Children. Under 5 travel free. Ages 5 to 8 pay 75 per cent of the adult price. From 9 years the full adult price applies, because a nine-year-old walks the same distance as everyone else. Tell us the ages when you book and we will apply the reduction before you pay.

How it works

  1. Book and confirm. Pay at checkout or message us on WhatsApp first. We confirm your date, your meeting point and your guide within one hour, and tell you exactly what to bring.
  2. Day 1. 09:00 Meet in Sapa town and walk down into Cat Cat.
  3. Getting back. 15:30 Vehicle back to Sapa town. That usually leaves time to shower before an evening bus or train to Hanoi.

What to bring

It is a day walk from Sapa town, so bring only what you want on your back for the day.

  • Shoes with grip and ankle support. Trainers are fine in dry weather, not after rain
  • Walking poles if your knees dislike descents
  • Rain jacket or poncho, whatever the forecast says
  • A warm layer. Sapa is a mountain town and evenings are cold from October to March
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Cash in Vietnamese dong for drinks and anything you buy in the villages
  • Any medication you take, plus blister plasters
  • Something to change into if you plan to swim

Getting to Sapa from Hanoi

Sapa is five to six hours from Hanoi. Most people take an overnight sleeper bus and arrive early, or a day bus that gets in around lunchtime. There is also the night train to Lao Cai plus an hour by road.

This tour starts and finishes in Sapa town, so transport from Hanoi is not included in the price above. We book it for you if you want it. Tell us your dates when you book and we will add it to your booking with the fare shown before you pay, rather than leaving you to sort it out at a bus office.
