What Amanda is good at
The second morning goes somewhere almost no other ship on this bay goes: Quan Y Cave on Cat Ba Island. It is a historical site rather than a scenic one, a cave that was fitted out and used during the war. You go ashore at Gia Luan Port by tender, then about 20 minutes by road.
That makes Amanda a good pick if the usual limestone-and-kayak morning does not excite you, or if you are travelling with someone who would rather walk through history than paddle.
Choosing a cabin
Junior and Senior Suite are both 30 sqm, $270 and $300, so the difference is position not space. The Royal Suite is 45 sqm at $330.
That last number is the one to notice. Half again the floor area for $30 over the Senior, and only $60 over the cheapest cabin on board. On most ships that jump costs $150 or more. If the Royal is free for your dates, take it.
Before you book
Transfer from Hanoi is charged separately, and there is a tender from Tuan Chau Harbor out to the ship. The Quan Y Cave trip starts at 07:15, so day two begins early.
