After helping hundreds of travellers experience Halong Bay, we’ve put together the 15 most important tips for making your cruise as good as possible — and avoiding the common mistakes first-timers make.

Before You Go

1. Book in Advance (Especially July–August)

Popular boats fill up 3–6 weeks ahead during peak season. Even in quieter months, good boats on your specific dates can sell out. Booking early gives you the best options — and you don’t pay anything upfront with Ava Travel Hanoi.

2. Choose Quality Over Cheapness

The $69 budget cruise might seem attractive, but travellers routinely report overcrowded boats, poor food, and broken facilities. In a destination as special as Halong Bay, the extra $50–$100 for a good mid-range boat makes an enormous difference.

3. Go for 2 or 3 Days — Never Just 1

Day trips to Halong Bay exist, but they’re essentially a 7-hour bus ride for 2 hours on the water. The overnight cruise experience — dinner on the bay, waking up surrounded by karsts — is what makes Halong Bay special.

4. Bring Motion Sickness Tablets

The bay is generally calm, but if you’re prone to motion sickness, take a tablet before boarding. It’s much easier to take preventatively than to manage once you’re already feeling ill.

5. Get Travel Insurance

Typhoons and storms can cause cruise cancellations, especially July–September. Good travel insurance covers you if this happens. Most quality boats will also refund or reschedule for weather cancellations, but insurance is still recommended.

What to Pack

6. Light Layers

Days can be hot (30°C+) but evenings on the water are cooler. A lightweight jacket or long-sleeved shirt is essential for comfortable evenings on deck.

7. Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Regular sunscreen contains chemicals harmful to coral reefs. Please use reef-safe sunscreen — Halong Bay’s marine ecosystem is fragile and worth protecting.

8. A Small Dry Bag

Essential for kayaking. Keep your phone and valuables dry. Small waterproof phone pouches are available cheaply in Hanoi’s Old Quarter.

9. Shoes with Grip

Cave paths and boat decks can be slippery when wet. Avoid flip-flops for cave visits — wear closed shoes or sandals with straps.

10. Try the Seafood

Halong Bay has some of Vietnam’s best seafood. Don’t be shy about the whole fish, the squid, or anything unfamiliar — it’s almost always excellent.

11. Wake Up for Sunrise

Set your alarm for 5:30–6:00 AM. The early morning light on the karsts is extraordinary and the bay is at its most peaceful before other boats wake up.

12. Tip Your Crew

Not mandatory but deeply appreciated. A small tip (50,000–100,000 VND per person) at the end of the cruise goes a long way for the crew who live and work on the boat year-round.

13. Bring Cash (Vietnamese Dong)

Most boats don’t accept cards for on-board purchases (drinks, souvenirs, spa treatments). Bring enough VND cash for extras.

Photography Tips

14. Golden Hour Is Your Best Friend

Sunrise and sunset produce magical soft light on the limestone karsts. Have your camera ready during these windows. Midday light is harsh and flat.

15. Look for Reflections

On calm mornings, the bay becomes a perfect mirror. The reflection shots — karsts mirrored in still water — are some of the most iconic Halong Bay images. Wake up early.
